A visit to Dierenpark Emmen is to take a fantastic world journey in one day. On your journey you will encounter countless different animals, fish, amphibians and insects. Dierenpark Emmen is the only zoo of its type in the north part of the Netherlands. In the course of the years, it has become one of the most important attractions in this part of the Netherlands. One of its unique aspects is keeping herds and flocks in relatively large areas designated for that purpose.

 

 

The Netherlands is a flat country. It has no mountains or cliffs. Yet in Drenthe, within a radius of 30 km, you will find the remains of 35 prehistoric tombs, some consisting of boulders weighing more than 20 tons that were transported to these sites. We call them 'Hunebedden' (= megalith tombs). But what are they exactly? How did these giant boulders come here? How old are they? What were they used for? Who built them and how did they do it? The fortified town of Bourtange is located in the beautiful region of Westerwolde (south-east Groningen). The unique, historic defensive works are an exceptional example of fortification. Past and present blend in perfectly in this small and attractive fortified town.

 

 

The unique location of HunzeDrôme makes it a perfect place for taking short trips to Germany. Places worthwhile visiting are:

Wunderland Kalkar
Situated amidst lovely laid-out gardens and ponds, Wunderland Kalkar has attractive restaurants, cosy pub-cafés, an amusement park for the entire family, and the Adventure outdoor centre.

Schloss Dankern
Dankern offers a relaxing time for the entire family: 120 types of playground equipment, and sport possibilities, all in the middle of nature.

The Drenthe cycle network takes you along the loveliest spots in the province. You decide which route to take and how many kilometres you want to cycle. The routes have double-sided signposts, so that you can cycle in both directions. You cycle from one intersection to the next with the help of numbered direction signs.
The unique aspect of the Drenthe cycle network is that the signposts of ANWB theme routes – and there are plenty of them in the province – are all integrated into the cycle intersection system. The theme route signposts are still recognisable by their six-sided ANWB route posts.

 

Cycling maps are available at the reception desk, starting at € 0.75.

 

 

There are lots of things to do around the Boomkroonpad (Tree-top Walk)! An exciting walk through a tunnel of roots. Experiencing the tree tops just like a squirrel. Playing in the Bosweide or in the Lorkenspeelbos, where nothing is mandatory, but lots is possible. Building huts, for example, or baking bread. Going on a treasure hunt in the wood or taking a ride in a horse-drawn tram along the nicest places in the forested area. The Boomkroonpad is also the starting point for an amazing walk through the forested area of Gieten-Borger. You have a pick of folders with descriptions of what you can see along the way. You can also visit the Forester Kuhn House (= Houtvester Kuhn Huis). In addition to a delightful presentation about forest life and a visit to a forest shop, you can also get information about spending a lovely day, afternoon or morning in the woods.

 

 

Go and explore our park area and discover the diversified facets of nature. Golfers are also welcome to Villapark HunzeDrôme. You will find the putting greens of the Semslanden Golf Club on the slopes of Hondsrug, situated right outside of Gasselternijveen, a short distance from HunzeDrôme. From HunzeDrôme you can take trips to many places such as Groningen (40 km), Emmen (25 km) and Assen (25 km).
